PACKING
Most people can pack as well as a professional, but not as quickly. You can usually purchase used boxes from your mover, saving substantially. The key to packing is to remember that if there is movement, then there is the possibility of damage! Wrap ALL fragile items, and insure that you have secured the items within the container, even by stuffing empty spaces with paper. The downside to performing your own packing is that you may be creating a gray area regarding damage in-transit. Because the carrier does not see the condition of the items prior to the move, picks up a container in perfect condition, and delivers it in perfect condition, he may exclude liability due to inherent vice, or act or omission by you, the shipper (poor packing). Although the savings is substantial, you will want to decide whether this is a risk you are willing to take. Discuss it with your carrier, or call EXCEL MOVING SERVICES for further information and options.

LONG DISTANCE
Because long distance moves are normally by WEIGHT, savings can mainly be made by reviewing all items being moved to see if it is worth paying to ship them or not. As an example, if the moving cost is $60.00/100 lbs., this is the same as $.60 per each pound. Look at each item and determine the shipping cost. If a 10 pound item costs $6.00 to ship, is it worth $6.00 if it only cost $3.00 to purchase? This item probably shouldn't be moved. EXCEL will gladly provide you with the rate per pound for your move to compare.

OVERSEAS
When moving overseas your cost is a combination of WEIGHT and SPACE. Because of this, large bulky items can be very costly to ship. Items such as sofas, overstuffed chairs, etc., can substantially increase the cost of a small move. As with a long distance move, the rate can be a great indicator to use to see if an item is worth shipping or not. A rate of $125.00/100 lbs. is the same as $1.25/per each POUND. If a 10 pound bag of flour only costs $5.00, it may not make sense to pay $12.50 to ship it (unless it isn't available for less at your destination).

Call
EXCEL MOVING SERVICES to provide you with a rate for your international move, as well as finding out the cost of any item at your overseas location.

NOTE:
Make sure that your mover lists any boxes with general contents on your inventory (shipping list). "PBO's, CU" stands for Packed by owner, Contents Unknown, and is a red flag to customs officials. You may be subjecting your shipment to an avoidable search of your shipment if documents are not properly prepared.

LOCAL MOVE
Because local moving is normally by TIME, the more you do the less you have to pay for. Moving fragile items such as mirrors, pictures, and table lamps, where possible, is advised. This saves you the cost of packing material and packing labor for proper handling by a professional mover. Being organized by having readily accessible as much as possible so that they can be loaded onto a van and off at destination will expedite your move. As an example, stacking your boxes in a garage will speed up the loading. At destination, pre-plan where you want the large items to be placed.
